Out of the blue, my phone rang. "Hi Brett, this is Diane Keaton."

She had seen my work for Johnson & Johnson and wanted me to direct her:30 spot on colorectal cancer screening. Katie Couric wanted to feature her in Katie's colorectal cancer initiatives.

Before we shot anything, we went over her dos and don'ts. She pointed a finger at me and said, "I will never, ever say the word rectal on camera, got it?" The whole spot was about colorectal screening, so I was a little concerned.

On shoot day we had an approved script, but I knew there was more she wanted to say. When we rolled, she became "Diane Keaton," with the laugh, the quick phrasing, and the look down where she turns into Annie Hall. Then I asked about a photo of her doing a handstand on the beach, and she said, "Can you believe I'm 60?"

That wasn't in the script. It's where she let go and started telling me personal stories. She said colorectal on camera many times.

Didn't matter who was in front of the camera. My job was the same. Find the moment where they stop performing.
